The CPTED program brings together police officers, residents, local planners, and members of various local agencies to examine how the area's physical features influence crime and the opportunity for crime. Aspects of community planning that CPTED examines include: creation of space, its use and density; locations of land uses; positions of buildings and other structures; interior and exterior design details such as color, lighting, entrances and exits, and landscaping; and the users of space and when and how they will use it. This handbook describes the theory, history and practice of CPTED and how to apply it to neighborhood problems. It includes suggestions on setting up a CPTED team, incorporating CPTED into new development, and case studies of CPTED in action.
