The 182,449 reported Part I and Part II offenses represented a 2.8-percent increase over the previous record set in 1995. The 1996 crime rate of 25.17 per 1,000 population was also a new high. The total included, 6,010 Part I violent crimes, an increase of 7.4 percent from 1995. Aggravated assaults increased by 11.1 percent and were responsible for much of the increase in violent crime. The number of reported homicides increased from 36 in 1995 to 52 in 1996. The number of Part I property crimes increased by less than 1 percent. The number of juveniles arrested increased by 6.7 percent, including a 7- percent increase in juvenile arrests for Part I violent crimes. Reports of drug law offenses increased by 4.9 percent statewide, while adult drug arrests declined by 6.4 percent and juvenile drug arrests increased by 3.4 percent.
