This report provides 1996 data, with comparison data for 1992-96, pertinent to the processing of juveniles under the jurisdiction of the Maricopa County Juvenile Probation Department (Arizona).
Abstract
A statistical summary shows that 447 juveniles out of 543 referrals were transferred to adult court, and there were 529 juveniles under the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Corrections. A total of 9,995 juveniles were detained, with an average daily population of 339 within a detention capacity for 277; the average stay was 13 days. There were 938 new cases placed on intensive probation, with the average number of days under such supervision being 226. A total of 330 juveniles were in residential treatment for an average period of 95 days. There were 4,107 new cases placed on probation for an average length of 450 days. Delinquency petitions numbered 13,187, along with 38,844 referrals. Data are also provided on the number of first- time offenders, the number of offenders who did not recidivate after 1 year, community service hours completed, restitution amounts collected, delinquency hearings completed, and delinquency court dispositions. The number of juvenile court judges and commissioners are reported, along with the amount of probation service fees collected. An explanation of the changes in the system in 1996 is provided.
