Abstract
America's young people are surrounded by violence, from the movies, television, and videos they watch to domestic or community incidents where violence is accepted as a way to solve problems. Communities around the country are working to combat violence by forming partnerships of schools, churches, civic organizations, local law enforcement and government agencies. Their efforts include neighborhood renewal, school programs to teach youngsters a sense of responsibility, and sports and arts programs to give young people positive alternatives to the negative street activities that involve violence and crime. The videos show some of these activities and describe them in detail, including community renewal efforts in Salinas and Fresno; Counter Force, a program to provide leisure time activities and academic mentoring for kids at risk in Vacaville; and programs that work with families to teach them anger management and problem-solving techniques. The videos include addresses of local, State and national organizations, including those featured in the videos, to contact for additional information
