The article discusses interventions that are based primarily on two theories: (1) Developmental-ecological theory provides a conceptual framework for understanding the context of abuse, and for planning effective interventions for the individual, the parents and the family, and other social contexts; and (2) Attachment theory provides a conceptual framework for understanding the disordered parent/child relationships that can lead to or result from maltreatment, and can suggest directions for intervention. Treatment services for children who have been maltreated and their families are fragmented and difficult to coordinate. It is imperative, given the multiplicity of possible problems, to have comprehensive, coordinated and integrated services for this population. The interventions discussed in this article lack sufficient empirical support from well-controlled studies to prove their efficacy. Table, references
