This article discusses the treatment of youth with histories of multiple victimization.
Abstract
The article presents a developmental treatment approach based on Eriksonian theory that highlights particular difficulties abuse presents for a child's successful passage through different developmental stages. It also discusses interventions addressing these difficulties, with case examples, and which multiple abuse victims can be helped by the therapeutic process. Working with adolescents who have a history of multiple trauma requires knowledge and experience in several mental health specialties. Clinical work in this area is best conducted by people who are committed to self-knowledge and growth. The clinician must balance the use of acting out behaviors that occur as grist for therapy with preventing the client's abusive behavior toward the therapist. Not all children who were abused can be helped by the therapeutic process. This article addresses treatment of those children who still have the capacity to engage in a healthy relationship and who can fully engage in the process of human development. References
