This article introduces and briefly describes five essays illustrating efforts to use collective bargaining, government policies, mediation, arbitration, and other alternative dispute resolution techniques.
Abstract
The first essay describes strategies for updating the role of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service in resolving collective bargaining disputes and supporting the transformation of US labor-management relations. The second essay summarizes South Africa's efforts to construct a modern, democratic labor relations system and inclusive, democratic national policy. The final three selections illustrate the challenges associated with the search for better ways to insure that worker rights written into employment laws are enforced effectively and efficiently. Note
