This 1996 edition of the Vermont Crime Report contains an analysis of crime reported to law enforcement agencies throughout the State during calendar year 1996.
Abstract
Data represent crimes reported to State police, game wardens, municipal police, sheriff's departments, and other State law enforcement agencies. Crime statistics are arranged statewide, by county, and by town. Details on crime definitions and how the data were collected and organized are included. Vermont is in the process of implementing a newly established national standard for crime reporting. The new standard, called Incident-Based Reporting, involves a different methodology for reporting crime when compared to the old standard or summary- based reporting. The benefits of this new methodology are discussed. One section of this report presents homicide data over the past 10 years (1987-96). This is followed by a presentation of statewide crime and offense statistics. Total Part I offenses (homicide, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, and arson) were 22,997 for 1996. There were 11 homicides, 206 forcible rapes, 79 robberies, 447 aggravated assaults, 5,254 burglaries, 15,717 larcenies, 1,068 motor vehicle thefts, and 215 arsons. Part II offenses totalled 54,191. Data are also provided on the number of full-time law enforcement officers by jurisdiction.
