Abstract
During 1996, 82 persons were detained in connection with Northern Irish terrorism, an increase from the 15 in 1995 when a cease fire was in effect. Two persons were detained in connection with international terrorism, compared to 19 in 1995. The 24 exclusion orders in effect at the end of 1996 represented a decrease from the 35 in effect at the end of 1995. Seventeen persons of the 84 persons detained in connection with terrorism were charged with an offense. Extensions of detention were granted for 23 persons.
