This manual is for use by training facilitators in introducing the basic theory of drug abuse prevention and three prevention strategies.
Abstract
The manual describes a 9-hour modular training curriculum and provides prevention practitioners and community members the skills to assess and increase the community's readiness to launch a prevention effort. The curriculum includes talking points for lectures, instructions for conducting discussions and exercises, and overheads and handouts. It discusses three prevention strategies. First is Drug Abuse Prevention for the General Population, illustrated by the Project STAR community-wide program to teach adolescents the skills necessary to counteract psychosocial influences that increase the likelihood of substance abuse. Second is Drug Abuse Prevention for At-Risk Groups, illustrated by the Strengthening Families Program, a family-focused program targeting children ages 6 to 10 whose parents are substance abusers. Third is Drug Abuse Prevention for At-Risk Individuals, illustrated by the Reconnecting Youth Program, a school-based program targeting 9th- through 12th-grade students who are at risk for dropping out of school, substance abuse and suicidal behavior.
