As a college text designed for use in lower-division courses, this book presents a realistic and straightforward look at modern criminal investigation techniques.
Abstract
The first part of the text covers fundamentals of criminal investigations, with emphasis on the rule of law and the preliminary investigation. The second part examines the investigative process and includes chapters on documenting the crime scene, search and seizure, identifying criminal suspects, the criminal intelligence function, making an arrest, interview and interrogation, and informant development and management. The third part looks at interpersonal violence, with chapters on wrongful death, robbery, assault, sex offenses, and child abuse and neglect. The fourth part looks at property crimes, including burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, arson, and bombings. The fifth part deals with vice crimes and related offenses, specifically, organized crime and vice, drug offenses, and white collar crime. The sixth and final part discusses prosecution and preparation for court. Discussion questions and suggested class projects are included at the end of chapters, and an appendix contains a list of legal cases. References and figures
