This video and information booklet describe and illustrate a creative and collaborative hands-on project which engages young people in alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention activities through the arts.
Abstract
The video shows children in school creating murals on the theme of drug prevention. This group project encourages collaboration and sharing among students. In addition, the murals are large in scale, impressive and unusual, and suited for public display so they reach other students, teachers, parents, and members of the community. The Prevention Information booklet provides background information for teachers or youth group leaders in preparing lessons on drug prevention. Data are presented in an Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Prevention Overview and in sections for different grade levels: Making a Difference, Positive Prevention Messages, Educating Your Students About Prevention and Where To Go For More Information. In addition to its anti-drug message, the murals project helps youngsters to develop positive self-images, select good role models and make intelligent and healthy life choices.
