Abstract
Notifiable offenses cover a wide spectrum of crimes, from minor thefts to homicide. In 1997, 91 percent of offenses recorded by the police were against property; 8 percent were violent crimes. Offenses of violence against the person rose by 6 percent, sexual offenses rose by 7 percent, but the number of robberies fell by 13 percent. Vehicle crimes fell by 14 percent, with drops in all but one police force area. Domestic burglary fell by 14 percent, with non-domestic burglary falling by 12 percent. The number of recorded burglaries fell in 41 of the 43 police force areas. Sixty-eight percent of violent crimes were cleared up in 1997, the highest clearance rate since 1991. Despite small increases in the clearance rate, fewer than one in five vehicle crimes, arsons and offenses of criminal damage were cleared up. Figures, tables, notes
