Abstract
A narrative description of Tennessee's judicial system is accompanied by a chart that shows the structure of Tennessee's court system. A section then describes the work of the Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), which provides support services to the entire court system, including the Tennessee Supreme Court. The services provided by the AOC are listed, and the work of its various divisions are profiled. The Court Services Division provides a wide range of services to the State's judiciary; included in this division are the Judicial Education and the Alternative Dispute Resolution Departments. The Finance and Personnel Division is responsible for developing budgets and providing accounting services for the State court system, and the Statistical Services and Indigent Defense Division maintains caseload statistics by analyzing data from court clerks. The Technology Services Division provides computer support for more than 1,400 court system personnel, maintains 73 local area networks, and oversees communications among all of the appellate court sites. The work of the Tennessee Supreme Court is described, and the Court's caseload data for fiscal year 1997-98 are provided. Information and data are also presented on the work of the Court of Appeals, which hears appeals in civil cases from trial courts and certain State boards and commissions. Information and data are provided as well for the Court of Criminal Appeals, which hears appeals from trial courts in felony and misdemeanor cases, along with postconviction petitions. Chancery, circuit, and criminal court filings and dispositions for fiscal year 1997-98 are reported. The State's boards and commissions are described, and a directory of court system personnel is included.
