This paper discusses the proposed implementation of key Australian national priorities in preventing car theft.
Abstract
The National Motor Vehicle Theft Task Force developed a national strategy to reduce and prevent car theft. The key components in the strategy include: (1) national information exchange; (2) component identification; (3) vehicle identifiers; (4) vehicle security improvements; (5) registration procedures; and (6) juvenile vehicle theft prevention. The 5-year implementation plan will be overseen by the proposed National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council, comprising key government, insurance and automotive industry representatives, and assisted by a small secretariat. The Council will oversee implementation of Task Force recommendations, which are the basis for further negotiations with all stakeholders -- in partnership. The insurance industry has offered a significant contribution towards the council's running expenses, on a cost-shared basis with the government. Figure, references
