The purpose of this book is to examine offender, victim, and situational elements surrounding various forms of crime, based on the use of national crime and victimization data to develop profiles of each crime type.
Abstract
The seven crime types include homicide and aggravated assault, sexual assault, personal and institutional robbery, residential and nonresidential burglary, motor vehicle theft, occupational and organizational crime, and public order offenses. After describing the syndromes associated with each crime type, crime prevention strategies are evaluated in light of the crime profiles. Comparisons within and between the crime profiles illustrate similarities and differences in criminal behavior. Each chapter in the book focuses on the crime in question, trends in the frequency of occurrence, offender and victim characteristics, situational elements and circumstances, particular subsets of crime syndromes, and crime prevention and intervention strategies.
