Data from the Uniform Crime Reporting Survey in Canada form the basis of this analysis of reported crime in 1997 and trends in violent crime, property crime, drunk driving offenses, drug law offenses, and juvenile delinquency in Canada.
Abstract
Reported crime decreased in 1997 for the sixth year in a row, falling 5 percent to the lowest rate since 1980. The rate of violent crime declined for the fifth consecutive year and was down 1.1 percent in 1997; these recent declined followed 15 years of consecutive increases. Rates decreased for almost all violent crimes, including sexual assault, robbery, and homicide. The 581 homicides represented a decline of 54 homicides from the previous year. The rate of motor vehicle declined by 3 percent after steadily increasing for more than a decade. The 5-percent decline in the rate of residential burglary followed 2 years of growth. The rate of youth charged with Criminal Code offenses declined 7 percent, continuing the general decline since 1991. Figures and tables
