Abstract

The first section of the report describes the Uniform Crime Reporting program in Arkansas, followed by a "crime summary." The summary notes that there were 118,892 serious crimes reported, with a 27-percent clearance rate. There were 4,736 serious crimes for every 100,000 inhabitants. A total of 210,716 arrests were made in the State; 10 percent of these involved persons under 18 years old. The value of property stolen was $118,772,953, an increase of 11 percent compared to 1996. The theft of jewelry and precious metals accounted for a property loss of approximately $9.7 million, an increase of 16 percent compared to 1996 and 26 percent higher than 5 years ago. Firearms were used in 69 percent of all murder/non-negligent manslaughter crimes reported, 50 percent of all robberies, and 25 percent of the aggravated assaults. A total of 1,084 rapes were reported during 1997, a 4- percent increase from 1996 and 10 percent higher than 5 years ago. There were 9,095 aggravated assaults reported, and residential burglaries accounted for 73 percent of all burglaries reported. A total of 7,888 motor vehicle thefts were reported, amounting to an approximate value loss of $50.1 million. Three Arkansas law enforcement officers were killed by felonious means while on duty, and there were 299 assaults on officers reported; 46 percent of these resulted in personal injury to the officer.
