There were 913,694 crimes of all types reported to the Uniform Crime Reporting Program by Pennsylvania law enforcement agencies. This represents a rate of 7,578.7 crimes per 100,000 estimated population, a 1.9-percent decrease from last year's total of 931,470 crimes. Crime Index Offenses include murder and non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson In 1997 a total of 361,729 Crime Index Offenses were reported and confirmed by police after investigation. In addition, 551,917 Part II offenses were reported, with a rate of 4,577.9 per 100,000 population. This is an increase of 0.6 percent from the 548,486 Part II offenses reported the previous year. Part II offenses include other assaults, forgery and counterfeiting, fraud, embezzlement, stolen property, vandalism, weapons, prostitution, other sex offenses, drug abuse violations, gambling, offenses against the family, driving under the influence, liquor law violations, drunkenness, disorderly conduct, vagrancy, and all other offenses. In 1997, 47.1 percent of all offenses were cleared. A total of 25.3 percent of the Crime Index Offenses were cleared, along with 61.3 percent of all Part II offenses.
