Abstract
There were 130,294 index offenses reported in 1997, a decrease of 8,112 crimes (5.9 percent) from the 138,406 reported in 1996. The 1997 total index offenses are the lowest reported since the Connecticut Uniform Crime Reporting program began in 1977. The number of violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) reported in 1997 was 12,784, a 5.1-percent decrease from 13,478 in 1996. There was a 5.9-percent decrease in property crimes (burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft). Almost half (47.7 percent) of violent offenses and 17.2 percent of property offenses were cleared. There were 19,830 incidents of family violence in which at least 1 person was arrested during 1997, a 6.3-percent increase since 1996. Approximately 85 percent of the cases involved an arrest for assault, breach of peace, or disorderly conduct. The number of reported hate crimes reported in 1997 was 121, a 15.4-percent decrease from 1996. No law enforcement officers were killed by a felonious act in 1997; one was killed by accident or negligence. There were 350 assaults on officers that produced injuries, compared to 391 in 1996. There were 455 assaults on officers without injury, compared to 337 in 1996. Extensive tabular and graphic data
