The primary source of data for the Digest was the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reporting System. The Crime Index, used to measure the magnitude of crime in the United States, is the sum of eight major offenses: murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft and arson. The Digest presents statistics in five parts: (1) Missouri Crime Clock, an overview of the frequency of occurrences of Crime Index offenses in the State in relation to crime; (2) data related to Crime Index offenses committed in Missouri; (3) data on arrest activity and clearance rates associated with Crime Index offenses as well as with other classes of criminal offenses; (4) data and analysis related to each of the eight types of Crime Index offenses; and (5) summary data on Crime Index offenses and arrest activity for specific law enforcement jurisdictions in Missouri.
