Abstract
Chapter One discusses how police, prisons, enforcement agencies, prosecutors and courts as well as public policy and society have been changed by the drug war. Chapter Two examines the betrayal of the Nation's constitutional heritage necessary to conduct that war. Chapter Three discusses how the judiciary has been deputized as an extension of the prosecution effort in the name of the drug menace. Chapter Four begins the search for the meaning of this domestic war. Chapter Five considers the use of drug hate to particular beneficiaries, including politicians who use it to get elected; the media, who use it as a made-for-television event; and government agencies that prosper under the shift in government mission. Finally, Chapter Six examines signs that the "Hate Age" may be coming to an end. Notes, bibliography, index
