Abstract
In 1997 a total of 17,122 crime index offenses were reported by local law enforcement agencies, a 3.2-percent decrease from the 17,682 reported in 1996. Crime index offenses include murder/non-negligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny/theft, and motor vehicle theft. The index crime rate per 100,000 population for 1997 was 2,671.1; the index crime rate for 1996 was 2,745.7. The total number of reported violent index crimes (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) was 549, a 7.6-percent decrease from the total of 594 reported in 1996. Violent crime accounted for 3 percent of total index crimes reported in 1997. Collectively, property crimes (burglary, larceny/theft, and motor vehicle theft) decreased by 3 percent from 17,088 reported in 1996 to 16,573 reported in 1997. Approximately 97 percent of index crimes reported in North Dakota were property crimes. The 13,163 larceny/theft offenses reported in 1997 accounted for 76.9 percent of total index crimes. More than $12 million worth of property was reported stolen in 1997, with 33.3 percent of that amount reported as recovered by law enforcement officials. 26 tables; 11 figures; and appended offense definitions, number and rate of index offenses by reporting jurisdiction, number of full-time law enforcement employees reported by UCR agencies, number and rate of index offenses by offense, 1978-97, and arrest by age, sex, and offense
