Abstract
There were 310,757 crime index offenses reported to Arizona police in 1996. A total of 60,336 persons were arrested for index offenses; adult index arrests were 40,712, and juvenile arrests were 19,624. Males accounted for 76.2 percent of the arrests, and females accounted for 23.8 percent. There were 59,532 clearances, or 19.2 percent of index offenses reported in 1996. Juveniles represented 23.8 percent of this total. A total of 27,626 violent crimes were reported in 1996, accounting for 8.9 percent of the total crime index. Aggravated assault accounted for the largest incidence of violent crimes (18,509 offenses), and homicide accounted for the smallest (374 offenses). The value of property stolen was $7,324,987. The crime rate was 619.4 offenses per 100,000 population. A total of 283,131 property crimes were reported in 1996, accounting for 91.1 percent of the total crime index. Larceny-theft accounted for the largest incidence of property crimes (185,905 offenses), and arson accounted for the smallest (1,373 offenses). There were 50,744 arrests for property crimes in 1996. One officer was killed in the line of duty and one K-9. A total of 1,807 officers were assaulted statewide in 1996, with the highest number of assaults (32.4 percent) occurring when officers were responding to disturbance calls.
