There were 116,869 serious crimes reported, with a 27- percent clearance rate. The crime rate was 4,765 serious crimes for every 100,000 inhabitants. A total of 195,060 arrests were made; 10 percent of these involved persons under 18 years old. A total of 923 rapes were reported during 1995, a 10-percent decrease from 1994, but a 35-percent increase from 10 years earlier. A total of 9,416 aggravated assaults were reported. Of these, 3,088 (33 percent) were committed with hands, fists, or feet, and 2,798 (30 percent) involved firearms. Firearms were used in 75 percent of all murder/non-negligent manslaughter offenses reported and in 50 percent of all robberies. Residential burglaries accounted for 73 percent of all burglaries reported. A total of 8,063 motor vehicle thefts were reported, amounting to an estimated loss of more than $44.4 million. The value of property stolen amounted to $104,204,549, an increase of 11 percent over 1994. Recovered property was estimated to be $41,116,751, with a recovery rate of 40 percent.
