Abstract
Crime statistics are reported for each year from 1991 through 1997. The total number of notifiable offenses recorded by police in 1997 was 62,222, compared to 63,492 in 1991. The number of crimes cleared in 1997 was 19,560 (31 percent) compared to 22,675 (36 percent) in 1991. Burglary was the most frequent offense reported to police in 1997, followed by theft/unauthorized taking of a motor vehicle. There were 40 murders in 1997 compared to 114 in 1991. A table shows the number of persons proceeded against by principal offense at the Crown Court and magistrates' courts in Northern Ireland for each year from 1991 through 1997. A graph shows the number of magistrates' courts' prosecutions by gender for 1988-97 as well as the number of those convicted at all courts by age and gender for 1997. A graph also shows the number of persons convicted who had a previous conviction, by court and gender for 1997. Data are also provided on various sentencing dispositions for 1991-97, followed by tabular data on the average prison population by gender for each year for 1991-97. Data also show the average immediate- custody prison population by offense and sentence length for 1997. Expenditure data address law, order, protective, and miscellaneous services in Northern Ireland, 1997/98.
