This is a detailed description of New York State's Comprehensive Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment (CASAT) program as of June 30, 1997.
Abstract
The CASAT program consists of three phases designed to provide a continuum of treatment services. The first phase involves participation in an Alcohol and Substance Abuse Correctional Treatment Center. These centers are medium-security facilities operating as therapeutic communities. Treatment includes drug education, counseling programs and the development of skills and coping mechanisms to facilitate recovery. Phase Two, Community Reintegration, involves the participant moving to a work release facility or to an appropriate placement in the community. This phase allows participants to continue in a structured treatment program while resuming the responsibilities of employment and community living. Aftercare, the third and final phase, is based on participants' needs and previously developed treatment plans and focuses on relapse prevention. The report describes each of the phases and discusses estimated cost savings that may be attributed to operation of the CASAT program. Notes, figures, tables, appendixes
