Abstract
Using conflict resolution techniques in the correctional setting makes sense because it can lower tensions among all parties involved and help disputants understand there are alternatives to aggression and force in decision-making. Accordingly, the two main themes of the book are: (1) All correctional professionals need a set of tools to manage and resolve conflicts; and (2) These tools must be used not only to manage and resolve conflicts but also to build a positive community and working environment. Specific book chapters cover conflict management techniques and tools in corrections, cooperation and collaboration in conflict resolution, roles of correctional staff and clients in conflict resolution, conflict management in probation and parole and in day and residential programs, conflict management in mediation programs, and restorative justice. Positive benefits of using conflict management and conflict resolution techniques as part of the correctional professional's routine way of dealing with people are highlighted.
