The report compares crime rates by county and presents data for the State and for the city and county of Honolulu, as well as for Maui and Kauai counties. Highlights of the report include the following: (1) In 1996, Hawaii ranked 40th in the Nation per 100,000 resident population for reported murders, 37th for forcible rapes, 24th for robberies and 46th for aggravated assaults, 13th for burglaries, 2nd for larceny-thefts and 11th for motor vehicle thefts; (2) Index Crimes decreased 9 percent statewide from 1996 to 1997; (3) Violent offenses were marginally reduced, by 0.1 percent, from 1996 to 1997; (4) Property crimes declined 9 percent from 1996 to 1997; (5) The total number of arrests statewide increased 6.4 percent from 1996 to 1997; and (6) From 1996 to 1997, the number of adult arrests increased 10.1 percent, while juvenile arrests decreased 3.7 percent.
