This report details crimes, clearance rates, arrests, law enforcement officers killed or assaulted, and law enforcement employee data in Maryland during 1998, based on data from the Maryland Uniform Crime Reporting Program.
Abstract
A total of 274,587 crime incidents were reported in 1998, representing a 5-percent decrease from 1997. Violent crimes decreased 5-percent; property crimes decreased 4 percent. The 316,599 arrests represented a 5 percent increase from 1997. The arrests included 263,123 arrests of adults and 53,476 arrests of juveniles. A total of 41,489 persons were arrested for drug law offenses; 24,444 persons were arrested for driving while intoxicated. Three officers were killed in the line of duty. The 4,737 officers assaulted represented 33 percent of full-time law enforcement officers. A total of 14,255 full-time law enforcement officers were employed in 1998; this total amounted to 2.8 law enforcement officers per 1,000 population. The Maryland Uniform Crime Reporting Program has increased its data collection since its inception and now includes domestic assault, hate crimes, and carjacking. Tables and figures
