The survey used a stratified, multistage area probability sample and collected information through 25,500 interviews conducted through personal visits to each selected residence. The researchers derived population estimates through the development of weights, adjustment for nonresponse through imputation, and the development of estimates accompanied by an upper and lower confidence limit. The report presents drug use prevalence data for each gender; four major age groups (12-17, 18-25, 26-34, and 35 years old or older); three major mutually exclusive racial/ethnic groups, based on participants' self-classifications (Hispanic in origin; white, not of Hispanic origin; and black, not of Hispanic origin; and four geographic regions. The report grouped the prevalence estimates by drug categories and presented estimates on the frequency of drug use. The data tables revealed that an estimated 35.8 percent of the total population age 12 and over reported using an illicit drug at some time, 6.2 percent reported using an illicit drug in the past month, 81.3 percent reported using alcohol at some time, and 51.7 percent reported using alcohol in the past month.
