This report summarizes the presentations and workgroup briefings from a regional conference held in January 1997 to gather information, assess current trends, and solicit recommendations from experts on how to refining the national strategy for addressing methamphetamine.
Abstract
The more than 160 participants from 6 western States included Federal, State, and local experts from drug law enforcement, drug prevention, and drug treatment, as well as representatives of business and public-interest groups in the region. Plenary sessions focused on current use data taken from drug arrestees, the role of schools in reducing drug abuse, drug treatment and the physiological effects of methamphetamine abuse, legal issues related to the Methamphetamine Control Act of 1996, and a law enforcement intelligence review of methamphetamine trafficking patterns. Four working groups reviewed prevention and education initiatives; linkages among treatment, law enforcement, and the courts; control of precursor chemicals; and clandestine laboratories.
