There were 21,894 Part I offenses that encompass murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. These offenses committed in 1998, were a 7.3-percent decline from 1997, yielding a crime rate of 40.08. The total number of cases closed in 1998 for Part I offenses was 2,113. There were 22,334 Part II offenses that encompass assaults, forgery, fraud, embezzlement, stolen property, weapons violations, etc. These were committed in 1998, a 15.6-percent increase from 1997, yielding a crime rate of 40.89 for Part II offenses. The total number of cases closed for Part II offenses was 5,778. There were 295,869 calls for service received and 135,235 calls for service dispatched. There were 7,150 adult charges/arrests and 1,603 juvenile charges/arrests.
