Data on Oregon's criminal offenses and arrests for 1997 were obtained through the Oregon Uniform Crime Reporting program, whose data derive from the reporting of Oregon's law enforcement agencies.
Abstract
The offense groups addressed are crimes against persons (murder, negligent homicide, rape, other sex crimes, kidnapping, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault); crimes against property (burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, arson, forgery/counterfeit, fraud, embezzlement, stolen property, and vandalism); and behavioral crimes (weapons regulation laws, prostitution, drug laws, gambling, offenses against family, drunk driving, liquor laws, disorderly conduct, all other offenses but traffic, curfew, and runaway juveniles). Crime in Oregon increased 5.6 percent in 1997 compared to 1996. Crimes against persons decreased 1.2 percent from 1996, with decreases reported for homicide, other sex crimes, robbery, and aggravated assault; increases were reported for negligent homicide, rape, and kidnapping; simple assault showed no change. Crimes against property increased 6.3 percent, with decreases reported only for vandalism. Behavioral crimes increased 6.5 percent, with decreases reported for prostitution, gambling, drunk driving, and curfew violations. The index crime rate for 1997 was 639.9 crimes per 10,000 population, a 5.5-percent increase from 1996. The total number of arrests (178,945) increased 1.8 percent. Extensive tables and figures
