This book discusses the need for a comprehensive leadership development model for the education and training of police, justice and public safety supervisors, managers and front-line officers.
Abstract
The book examines the profound impact of leadership development on the morale and performance of individual officers, teams and organizations. It illustrates in detail how police and other justice and public safety leaders (in corrections, fire, customs, immigration, security, courts, etc.) can implement the Transforming Leadership process, skills and principles. The book provides a model to integrate other models into a holistic leadership development framework, a map for developing critical leadership skills while still including self-assessment and developmental aspects. It includes data on the skills of personal mastery, interpersonal communication, counseling and problem management, team and organization development, and versatility in style, skill, and role. In addition, the book discusses building a personal leadership development plan, leadership theories overview, transformation through personnel systems, security in the policing environment, stages in the development of a personal faith position, deep structure strategic planning and competence in using skills.
