Statistical data based on monthly crime and arrest reports submitted by nearly 360 law enforcement agencies throughout Wisconsin for 1998 are tabulated in this report.
Abstract
The first half of the report presents statewide information on crime and arrests, together with individual sections on each index crime. The second half of the report contains more detailed crime and arrest information for individual jurisdictions in Wisconsin, organized alphabetically by county. The data show 183,626 index crimes were reported in 1998, a 3.9 percent decrease over 1997; 476,322 arrests were made, a 1.3 percent increase over 1997. The 1998 crime rate for Wisconsin was 3,508.1 index crimes per 100,000 residents. Overall, 26.3 percent of index crimes were cleared, somewhat less than the 1997 clearance rate of 27.4 percent. Violent crime decreased by 7.1 percent in 1998. The total of $142,245,130 in stolen property was 9.4 percent less than the total stolen during 1997. Over 56 percent of murder offenders were between 17 and 27 years of age, handguns were involved in 56 percent of murders, juveniles accounted for nearly 78 percent of all sexual assault victims, robbery decreased by 14.2 percent, and aggravated assault decreased by 4 percent. Nearly 63 percent of those arrested for arson were juveniles, and the total estimated arson dollar loss increased by nearly 29 percent in 1998. Four law enforcement officers were killed while in the performance of their duties and there were 475 assaults on law enforcement officers. The 53 hate crimes in 1998 represented a decline from the 53 reported in 1996. Appendixes contain supplemental information on crime and arrests in Wisconsin. Tables and figures
