To gather the information for the publication, researchers made direct contact with Federal agencies and principal investigators who conducted the studies. Abstract summaries for completed studies included the purpose of the study, the study methodology, a summary of findings, funding agency, and grant or contract number. Tables indicate that 133 studies on child maltreatment were conducted in fiscal year 1997; the Department of Health and Human Services (National Institute of Mental Health and National Institute on Drug Abuse) funded the most studies. Of the 133 studies, 76 had child abuse and neglect as a primary focus and 57 had this topic as a secondary focus. The studies investigated physical and sexual abuse, emotional maltreatment, and physical neglect. The studies were conducted in response to four research priorities: (1) research that explores the nature and scope of child maltreatment; (2) research that expands the understanding of child maltreatment origins and consequences; (3) research that improves treatment and prevention techniques; and (4) research that contributes to the development of a science policy for research on child maltreatment. 6 tables
