Prepared from information provided through the Oregon Uniform Crime Reporting program by Oregon law enforcement agencies for 1997, this report presents statistics and information in offense and arrest groupings of crimes against persons, crimes against property, and behavioral crimes.
Abstract
Crimes against persons encompass willful murder, negligent homicide, rape, other sex crimes, kidnapping, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault. Crimes against property involve burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, arson, forgery/counterfeit, fraud, embezzlement, stolen property, and vandalism. Behavioral crimes pertain to weapons regulation laws, prostitution, drug laws, gambling, offenses against family, drunk driving, liquor laws, disorderly conduct, curfew, runaway juveniles, and all other offenses (except traffic). Crime in Oregon increased 5.6 percent in 1997 compared to 1996. Crime increased in 21 of the 36 counties in the State. Crimes against persons decreased 1.2 percent from 1996 to 1997. Willful homicide, other sex crimes, robbery, and aggravated assault all reported decreases. Negligent homicide, rape, and kidnapping increased, but simple assault showed no change. Crimes against property increased 6.3 percent from 1996 to 1997. Increases were reported for burglary, larceny, motor vehicle theft, arson, forgery/counterfeiting, fraud, embezzlement, and stolen property offenses. Vandalism decreased.
