This chapter describes 21 public safety and crime prevention programs that the Department of Justice operates or to which the Federal Government provides funding, technical assistance, or both.
Abstract
The descriptions are part of a guidebook that aims to assist communities in locating Federal programs and technical assistance that can help them achieve their goals for community revitalization, family support, youth development, crime prevention, and other areas. Each listing describes the program and its activities and gives the program contact information and the Department of Justice contact information and Web site. The programs include the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Byrne Discretionary Grant Program, the BJA Community Justice Assistance Center, and the BJA Local Law Enforcement Block Grants. Additional programs include the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office Universal Hiring Program, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), the Drug Courts Program Office of the Office of Justice Programs, the Drug Free Communities Program, and the Executive Office for Weed and Seed. Further agencies and programs include the National Crime Prevention Council; the Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime; the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) Discretionary Grant Program; and OJJDP grant programs for drug prevention, law-related education, formula grants, and juvenile mentoring. Other programs include the Public Housing Drug Elimination Program, Rural Domestic Violence and Child Abuse Enforcement Assistance, the Safe Communities Program of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative, and the STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grants of the Violence Against Women Office.
