Community policing and problem-oriented policing have been used to deal with such chronic crime problems as gangs, drugs, and vandalism. Although law enforcement has not been as proactive in the case of domestic violence, efforts have been initiated in several jurisdictions to curb domestic violence. These efforts focus on the provision of emergency housing to female and child victims of domestic violence, physical abuse, victim assistance and advocacy, and breaking down the myths of domestic violence. The various approaches to domestic violence prevention also consider the effects of domestic violence on children, the role of police officers in investigating and providing services in domestic violence cases, domestic violence prosecution, the use of volunteers, and police officer training in how to handle domestic violence cases.
