Over the past 3 years, the OJP has funded a wide range of new initiatives to help local communities take a more coordinated and comprehensive approach to crime control and prevention. Specifically, the OJP is supporting many community-based crime prevention initiatives, including Weed and Seed programs, Project PACT (Pulling America's Communities Together), the Safe Futures Program of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), and programs of the Department of Housing and Urban Development to revitalize communities designated as Empowerment Zones or Enterprise Communities. The OJP has created a Community-Based Initiatives Working Group to consider ways in which the Federal Government can further help communities attack crime. In addition, the OJP is working through the OJJDP to train community teams in implementing youth-focused community policing. Other activities of the OJP are described that focus on improving the delivery of criminal justice services, community-based justice options such as restitution and community service, and the use of new information technology in the fight against crime. 2 photographs
