Abstract
In 1999, Missouri had a total of 193,890 traffic crashes. The economic loss associated with these traffic crashes was estimated to be $3,167,303,000. In these traffic crashes, 0.5 percent (n=964) involved one or more persons being killed in the incident. In addition, 26.1 percent (n=50,623) involved no persons being killed but one or more persons being injured in the incident. In 1999, 1,094 persons died in traffic crashes, with one person killed every 8 hours. The death rate was 1.6 per 100 million miles of travel. Also in 1999, 78,317 persons were injured in traffic crashes, with one person injured every 6.7 minutes. Detailed data are tabulated on causal factors in and characteristics of traffic crashes in Missouri that directly affect the frequency of occurrence and personal death and injury severity levels. Causal factors and characteristics of traffic crashes pertain to speed, drinking, age, private versus commercial vehicles, motorcycles, school buses, bicycles, pedestrians, fixed objects, hazardous materials, construction and work zones, and seat belt use.
