This article introduces a series of papers that examine victimization and romantic relationships in adolescence.
Abstract
The articles examine many types of victimization, including the nature of romantic life for youth with a history of child maltreatment and the impact of physical or sexual victimization in romantic relationships. They consider not only romantic relationships but also romantic experiences that may occur even when a romantic relationship per se does not exist, such as mixed-sex activities and other-sex friendships. They describe how past victimization may influence the development of early romantic behaviors and how such behaviors may be related to the emergence of coercive romantic relationships. In summary, the articles begin to provide theory and findings that bridge the gap between work on adolescent romance and work on victimization in youth and attempt to stimulate further study and treatment of victimization within the context of adolescent romantic relationships.
