There were 111,038 index offenses reported to police in 1999, a decrease of 12,950 crimes (10.4 percent) from the 123,988 reported in 1998. This is the lowest number of crimes reported since the UCR program began in 1977. There were 11,380 violent crimes (murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault), a 5.2-percent decrease from the 12,007 in 1998. There were 99,658 property crimes (burglary, larceny, and motor vehicle theft), an 11-percent decrease from 1998. There were 162,448 arrests for Part I and Part II offenses combined. Arrest data are presented by age, sex, and race. Data on index offenses are presented by county, and data are provided on the value of property stolen and recovered. One officer was killed in 1999, and 352 officers were assaulted and injured; 296 officers were assaulted without injury. Data are presented on both sworn and civilian law enforcement personnel. There were 18,948 incidents of family violence in which at least one person was arrested, a decrease of only 0.2 percent from the previous year. There were 136 incidents of hate crimes.
