This article discusses enforcing the underage drinking laws in Pennsylvania.
Abstract
The article describes Commonwealth efforts to reduce underage drinking through community action, efforts funded through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency as part of the Federal Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's Enforcing the Underage Drinking Laws Program. Some of the most interesting and creative examples of the community approach can be found in Erie, with its Kids Interacting Drug-Free Coalition and Teen Anti-Drug Coalition. The programs include a broad range of educational and preventive activities, including: (1) Get the Point, which encourages local middle and high school students to find creative ways to spread the anti-drink message; (2) Youth Leadership Conference, which includes mock trials and demonstrations showing teens what it is like to try to walk and operate a motor vehicle after drinking; and (3) After-School Programs conducted by police, which combine snacks, sports, and an anti-drinking message. The article describes programs in other Pennsylvania cities and presents sources of national and State-by-State information on underage drinking. Notes
