This neglect is ironic for a variety of reasons. Children are among the most highly victimized segments of the population. In addition, victimization has major consequences for children in terms of its effects on development. Victimization can also affect personality formation, mental health, academic performance, and delinquent behavior. Definitional issues in research on juvenile victimization are addressed, as well as methodological limitations in the field of developmental victimology. The authors indicate children are victimized more than adults, present a typology of juvenile victimization, and discuss why juvenile victimization is so common. Further, they look at child development in the context of victimization, intra-family victimization, the link between gender and victimization, the routine activities theory and children, and effects and economic costs of victimization. Research needs related to juvenile victimization are identified that focus on the impact of victimization, risk factors, treatment efficacy, and criminal justice policy. 122 references, 3 endnotes, 8 tables, and 6 figures
