This report presents statistics on crimes known to police in Rhode Island in 1999, based on data supplied by all law enforcement agencies in the State in accordance with the standards and procedures of Uniform Crime Reports; data on arrests are included as well.
Abstract
There were 36 murders in 1999 compared to 25 in 1998, a 44-percent increase. Rapes totaled 391, a 13-percent increase from the 346 recorded the previous year. Robbery increased 18.7 percent from 1998, from 662 to 786. Aggravated assaults, however, decreased 20 percent, from 2,036 in 1998 to 1,628 in 1999. The number of burglaries in 1999 was 6,341, a 1.5-percent decrease from the 6,443 recorded in 1998. Larceny-theft increased 4.3 percent, from 21,359 in 1998 to 22,292 in 1999; and motor vehicle theft increased from 3,822 in 1998 to 4,032 in 1999, a 5.4-percent increase. The total number of Crime Index Offenses was 35,506 in 1999, a 2.3-percent increase from the 1998 figure of 34,693. The percentage of change in Crime Index Offenses from 1994 is compared for Rhode Island, the United States as a whole, the Northeast region, and New England. The 10-year trend (1990-99) for violent crimes and property crimes is shown for Rhode Island. Arrest data are distinguished for arrestees 18 years of age and older and arrestees under 18 years old. An alcohol impairment summary by county shows the number of impaired drivers with various levels of blood alcohol concentration. Data are provided separately for hate crimes (total of 41) and domestic violence (7,021 reports and 5,516 arrests). A Law Enforcement directory is provided.
