This article describes how the Safe Streets Task Force concept can help law enforcement agencies reduce crime in their communities.
Abstract
Investigation into a violent criminal street gang known as the New Breed illustrates how the cooperative efforts of the Safe Streets Task Force concept can get results. The New Breed gang started within the confines of the Illinois prison system. The gang's largest source of profit was the illegal distribution of narcotics, most notably heroin. The gang eventually was active in criminal activities in at least five major cities. To develop the drug dealing case against the gang, task force detectives worked with Indianapolis, IN, FBI agents. Task force officers used several surveillance techniques, including a Federal communications wiretap order on the New Breed's main cellular telephone. Ultimately, the investigation of the New Breed gang in Indianapolis was successful and officers made numerous felony arrests for a wide range of offenses. The success was in direct proportion to the cooperation among various agencies, including the FBI and local law enforcement agencies. Notes
