This research update provides summarizes on seven studies in the field of drug court research and evaluation.
Abstract
This article covers seven recent drug court research and evaluation studies: (1) a first year outcome evaluation on the Greater Cleveland Drug Court Program which found 58.5 days between arrest and treatment for participants versus 177.8 days for the comparison group; (2) a retention and cost benefit analysis of the Allen County Drug Court Intervention Program reported a 75 percent retention rate, while the program cost per participant was estimated at $1,650; (3) an outcome evaluation of the Delaware Juvenile Drug Court Diversion Program in New Castle and Kent Counties found 18 months after completion a recidivism rate of 47.7 percent for the compliance group, 67.3 percent for the non-compliance group, and 60.5 percent for the control group; (4) a recidivism analysis and outcome evaluation of the Orange County Drug Courts in California found a recidivism rate of 16 percent for participants versus 24 percent for a probation comparison group; (5) an outcome evaluation covering the sanction of the Creek County Drug Court showed a retention rate of 68 percent; (6) a recidivism and cost benefit analysis of Project Exodus, Maine's first treatment drug court found cost savings of $5,556.69 per year, per client and 90 percent of the graduates were not known to have recidivated; and (7) a case processing evaluation of the Denver Drug Court found that 81 percent of those cases in treatment experienced no change or had a positive change in the level of treatment or supervision.
