Abstract
The Centre for International Crime Prevention of the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention is responsible for the program of work described in this note. The Centre is guided by the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, which is a functional body of the U.N. Economic and Social Council. The overall objective of the U.N. Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Program is to strengthen international cooperation and assistance to governments in addressing crime problems, such as those posed by transnational organized crime, trafficking in persons, economic and financial crime (including money laundering and corruption), illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in firearms, and terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. During the biennium, the Centre will undertake activities to promote and support the entry into force of the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime and its three protocols. The Centre will also provide assistance to member states in conducting preparatory work and implementing the Convention and its protocols. Further, the Centre will undertake substantive activities to complement its tasks relating to the negotiation and implementation of conventions and protocols. This note also outlines the responsibilities of the following policymaking organs: the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime, and the Ad Hoc Committee on the Elaboration of a Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime. The note concludes with an outline of the program of work's objectives, expected accomplishments and performance indicators, external factors, and outputs.
